Kristel O'Malley is the 2000-2001 recipient of the Otis L. Floyd scholarship
Kristel
states that “There are two main reasons I give to my community.
First, I thoroughly enjoy helping others.
The smiles and hugs I receive from those I have helped are more than
enough to keep me going. My second
reason for participating in so many community activities is that I feel I need
to give back to the community which has given so much to me.”
She is active in church as a leader of the Senior High Acteens group,
co-leader of the Jr. High Acteens group, sings in the choir, leads a freshman
girls’ Bible study as well as supporting other church-related activities. This summer she will spend about a month in Turkey with a
group working in an orphanage, doing street evangelism and distributing blankets
and supplies to earthquake victims. Although
Kristel states that she is “not doing it for awards”, she has received
numerous honors. Some of these
include: Top Teen in Acteens (one of twenty in the United States),
the Jefferson Award for Community Service (one of ten awarded in Memphis
out of 195 semi-finalists), Who’s Who Among American High School Students (two
years), delegate from Collierville High School to Hugh O’Brien Youth
Leadership Conference, National Honor Society, Beta Club, Concert and Marching
Band, Youth Alive, Mu Alpha Theta,
Spanish Club, Bridge Builders, and others.
She has been featured in articles of both local and regional newspapers. Even with all of these activities, she also worked as a Team
Leader with Chick-Fil-A over the past two years. This
fall, Kristel will enroll at Austin Peay State University, majoring in
pre-pharmacy. Her goal is to become
a pharmacist and someday hopes to open a free clinic to serve those in need of
such help. The
Otis Floyd Scholarship covers in-state tuition and fees at Austin Peay State
University for fall and spring semester, the cost of room and board, a $500 book
allowance per year, and a $500 stipend per year. The award can be renewed for a maximum of four years,
provided the recipient maintains a 3.0 grade point average or above, a full-time
course load and is involved in institutional and/or community service
activities. The scholarship
alternates between two-year and four-year institutions, with the institution’s
President nominating a high school senior who has applied and been accepted into the TBR institution.
Applications can be made through the campus financial aid office at each
TBR institution. The deadline is
usually set at March 15th, prior to the fall semester in which the
student will enroll. For further
information contact: Dr.
Treva Berryman, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at (615)
