Dr. Shirley Raines Named President of University of Memphis

Enthusiasm, Fundraising, Legislative Skills Praised

Nashville, Tennessee, January 30, 2001 - Chancellor Charles Manning of the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) today announced that the Board of Regents has approved his nomination of Dr. Shirley Raines, Vice Chancellor for Academic Services and Dean of the College of Education at the University of Kentucky, as the new president of the University of Memphis.

"We had three excellent finalists," said Manning, "and this was not an easy decision.  Given the challenges facing the University of Memphis, it seems to me that Dr. Raines has the mix of experience and personality required to take the university to the next level.  Her demonstrated ability to create enthusiasm in all segments of the community, her achievements in raising funds and her success in working with the legislature make her very well suited for the University's needs.  I think she will do an outstanding job working with the faculty, staff and students at U of M, as well as in gaining the support and cooperation of the community constituencies of the University.  I am very proud and pleased that she has accepted the position. We expect her to be on the job on or before July 1."

Raines, a native of Bells, Tennessee, has been at the University of Kentucky since 1995.  She went there from the University of South Florida in Tampa, where she was professor and department chair of Childhood/Language Arts/Reading Education.  She has also worked at George Mason University and at Northeastern State in Oklahoma.  She holds an Ed.D. and an M.S. from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and a B.S. from the University of Tennessee in Martin.

In accepting the position, Raines said, "Thank you to all who participated in the search process.  I am excited about our future together. Now that the selection process is over, I invite all of the high school students who are deciding where to attend college in 2001 to meet me at the University of Memphis.  To the adults who want advanced degrees or who want to advance in their careers, my request is, "Come to the University of Memphis."  To the faculty and staff members who are considering positions, my message is, "Come to the University of Memphis."  To the community leaders, my goal is to meet you in the communities throughout the Mid-south to tell you all about the University of Memphis.  Bob and I will be in Memphis on Thursday and at the Pyramid on Friday to cheer for Coach Calipari and our University of Memphis Tigers."

The Tennessee Board of Regents is the nation's sixth largest higher education system, governing 45 post-secondary educational institutions.  The TBR system includes six universities, 13 two-year colleges and 26 technology centers, providing programs to over 180,000 students in 90 of Tennessee's 95 counties.
