TBR Report
Card Shows Record Number of
Degrees Granted in Academic Year 2000
Universities, Two-Year Colleges and
Technology Centers All Awarded Highest Number of Credentials Ever
Nashville,
Tennessee, October
3, 2001—The
Tennessee Board of Regents today released its fourth annual report card,
providing data on 15 performance indicators for each institution in the TBR
system and for the system as a whole. TBR
schools granted a record number of degrees in the academic year 1999-2000 with
24,773 students earning a degree, certificate or diploma, the highest number in
the system’s history. This
represents a 6% increase over last year. The TBR universities and two-year colleges awarded 5% and 9%
more degrees, respectively, than in 1999, while the technology centers awarded
8% more certificates. The 1999-2000
TBR graduates who received an associate’s degree or above will contribute over
$11 billion to the economy over their lifetimes.
According to
Chancellor Charles Manning, “While we are certainly pleased with the record
numbers of graduates this year, we still have a long way to go before we can
claim an educated Tennessee. Our
state is ranked 41st in the nation in the percentage of adults with a
bachelor’s degree—only 16% of Tennesseans have a degree as compared to 18%
in the southeast and 21% in the nation as a whole.
If the state is to be competitive in the knowledge-based economy of the
future, we must at least reach the national average.”
The TBR
system-wide report card and the report cards for each of the system’s 45
institutions may be found under the Data and Statistics link at www.tbr.state.tn.us.
The intent of the report card is to ensure accountability to the General
Assembly and the public. It

institutions. The TBR system

providing programs to over 180,000 students in 90 of Tennessee’s 95 counties.
