Board of Regents Releases 2001-2002 Report Card

Research Dollars Generated Up 16%; Private Giving Increases 10%

Memphis, Tennessee, March 27, 2003The Tennessee Board of Regents today released the 2001-2002 Report Card for the TBR system.  The report card revealed a 16% one-year increase in research dollars generated by TBR universities, and an increase of 10% in the five-year average for private giving to universities and community colleges.  Both indicators have received increased board emphasis over the past two years.

The Board of Regents began issuing its report card over six years ago, and until this year it was Tennessee’s only higher education report card. The report card was instituted by the board as a means of ensuring and demonstrating public accountability by the institutions in the Tennessee Board of Regents system.

According to vice chairman Jack Fishman, “The Board of Regents has long felt that reporting our progress to the citizens of Tennessee is vital to the credibility of higher education in our state. The report card is also an essential internal management tool. It lets us see how successful we are in meeting key goals and priorities and helps us plan ahead for ten or more years.  The increase in attracting research dollars is an example of this accountability.  I am very proud of our institutions’ progress this year in increasing both outside funding for research and private giving, two areas of particular concern to the board in recent years.”

TBR chancellor Charles Manning says, “It is also significant that our institutions continue to show improvement in many areas, even with inadequate funding.  The dedication of our faculties and administrators is producing these positive results.”

Report cards for the system as a whole and for every institution in the TBR system are available on the TBR web site at http://www.tbr.state.tn.us.   Press needing faxed copies should contact Linda Bissette at 615-366-4403.
