Saving Lives in Tennessee -
Research Recognized by Board of Regents:

HARRIMAN, Tennessee - A special presentation  on breakthrough research at the University of Memphis was featured during the June 2000, Tennessee Board of Regents Quarterly Meeting at Roane State Community College. The presentation by Dr. Robert Klesges, Professor and Director of the University of Memphis Prevention Center (UMPC), explained how one public institution in Tennessee conducts ground-breaking research with significant implications for public health policy!  Honored by the National Institutes of Health, researchers have found a method for dramatically reducing death rates, while improving quality of life, for thousands of Tennesseans.

The goal of the UMPC is to reduce mortality and morbidity and increase the quality of life of the citizens of West Tennessee. Yet, the research conducted through the UMPC has provided a positive impact on the lives of individuals far beyond the State of Tennessee. Research and educational programs have addressed issues dealing with smoking cessation and prevention and other addictive behaviors, obesity and preventing obesity, preventing injuries in physically active individuals, and establishing a School of Public Health.

Other contributions include training doctoral students and conducting health promotion programs throughout the community. To date, the UMPC has assisted over 20,000 adults and children in the Memphis community with programs ranging from smoking cessation to prevention of child abuse. Assistance is provided to more than twenty (20) local nonprofit agencies, in an effort to improve their programs and evaluate effectiveness.

The Prevention Center currently has over 30 extramural grants at the federal, state, and local level. Current funded projects exceed $4 million per year. Nationally, the UMPC has received numerous National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants. A recent NIH sponsored conference highlighted the "best of the best" of prevention research. Out of the hundreds of prevention programs funded by NIH, ten (10) were picked to showcase NIH's commitment to prevention. One of the UMPC programs was selected to be highlighted at this conference.
