Webb was named by Governor Phil Bredesen to serve as Acting Commissioner of the Department of Education in February 2008; he was made permanent commissioner in July. Prior to these appointments, he served as Deputy Commissioner. He has been active in education since 1990 where he began as a math and social studies teacher. He served as a system-wide Title II Coordinator, Athletic Director, Assistant Principal and Superintendent of Lewis County Schools from 1997 – 2003. He is a retired Battalion Staff Officer of the Tennessee Army National Guard.
Webb holds a doctorate in Education Leadership from Nova Southeastern University, a master’s degree in Education Leadership from Middle Tennessee State University, a bachelor’s degree from Regents College and an associate’s degree from Columbia State Community College.
He is a member of the National Center of Education Statistics, the National Assessment Governing Board and the TNII Steering Committee. Webb is active in a number of Lewis County community groups.
