Tennessee's Community Colleges launch new TBR General Education Core

New General Education Core launches at Tennessee's Community Colleges

When Tennessee’s community colleges open the 2025-26 academic year this month, they’ll also launch the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) General Education Core, a transformative experience designed to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge for success in the 21st Century.

In an era where job markets are constantly changing, adaptability and agility are crucial. The General Education Core equips students with the ability to think critically and adapt to new challenges. Whether it's analyzing data, understanding cultural contexts, or communicating effectively, the skills gained through Core courses are transferable across multiple careers and industries. This versatility makes graduates more competitive and better prepared to navigate a world of evolving opportunities and workforce complexities.

Students seeking Associate of Science or Associate of Arts degrees will take 41 of their 60 credit hours in the Core courses. Students pursuing Associate of Applied Sciences degree will take 15 to 17 credit hours in Core courses. These credits include courses in humanities, history, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences, mathematics and communication, with students choosing the specific courses within the TBR Core framework.

The Core incorporates “The 7 Core Competencies” critical for personal and professional growth into the curriculum for every student. The 7 Core Competencies are:

1. Critical Thinking – Students will strengthen their ability to analyze complex issues, evaluate evidence, and construct well-reasoned arguments. This competency fosters intellectual curiosity and the capacity to approach problems from multiple perspectives.

2. Communication – Students will enhance their skills in writing, speaking, and digital communication, ensuring they can convey ideas clearly and persuasively in various contexts.

3. Scientific Inquiry & Mathematical Reasoning – Students will observe and explain the natural world around them, learn to interpret and manipulate numerical data, apply mathematical concepts, and make informed decisions based on quantitative analysis.

4. Information Literacy – The ability to locate, evaluate, and use information effectively is crucial in the digital age. Engagement with this competency will empower students to navigate the vast array of information sources, ensuring they can discern credible information and utilize it responsibly.

5. Ethical Reasoning – Students will explore ethical principles and apply them to real-world situations. This competency encourages a deep understanding of moral and ethical considerations, fostering responsible citizenship and personal integrity.

6. Global & Cultural Awareness – In our globalized society, intercultural competence is vital. Students will gain an appreciation for international perspectives, develop empathy, and learn to interact respectfully and effectively with people from different backgrounds.

7. Creative & Artistic Expression – Students will cultivate imagination, develop their unique voices, and engage with the creative process through visual arts, music, writing, performance, and design.

The 7 Core Competencies of the TBR General Education Core

“The TBR Core provides the tools for students to create the life and world THEY want,” said Dr. Robert M. Denn, TBR associate vice chancellor for academic affairs. “It is an integral and holistic part of a student’s higher education. The Constellation of 7 Core Competencies prepares students for a life of inquiry and individuation.”

Beginning in Spring 2019 with a series of exploratory meetings to evaluate the state of general education across the community college system, this month’s launch culminates six years of research, work and planning – led by an 18-member committee of faculty and academic leaders representing all 13 TBR community colleges and ultimately involving 3,000 faculty members.

“We are thrilled to introduce the General Education Core, which reflects our commitment to providing a comprehensive and forward-thinking education,” said TBR Chancellor Flora W. Tydings. “These core competencies are designed to prepare our students not only for their careers but also for meaningful and engaged lives. And I thank the dedicated faculty and staff for the thoughtful and diligent work to bring the Core to fruition.”

College is a time of personal growth and self-discovery. The TBR Core provides students with the flexibility and opportunities to explore their interests and passions. Whether it's through literature, art, or philosophy, students can discover new perspectives and develop a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them. This journey of self-discovery is essential for building confidence and finding one's purpose.
