NEED AND DEMAND MAPS

Both the need and demand maps are shown at the Census tract level and reflect an index based on the variables listed below. Campus locations were provided by TBR as of Fall 2020.

Need Variables

  1. Percent of adults without any college credentials (2020 U.S. Census data)
  2. Percent of labor force unemployed (2020 U.S. Census data)
  3. Percent of population below the poverty line (2020 U.S. Census data)
  4. Access to existing campuses (a combined metric based on the driving distance to the three nearest campuses and how many degree programs are offered at those campuses; TBR campus locations as of Fall 2020)
  5. Participation rate (percent of the population enrolled in a TBR institution, based on Fall 2020 enrollment and 2020 U.S. Census population data)

Demand Variables

  1. Population density (2020 U.S. Census data)
  2. Population projections (2020 base year data provided by the University of Tennessee Boyd Center for Business and Economic Research)
  3. High school graduates projections (2020 base year data provided by the Tennessee Department of Education)

WORKFORCE MAPS

Job outlook data is based on projections developed by the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development. Data was provided for this effort in a raw, custom format, but data for individual occupations and regions can be found at www.jobs4tn.gov under Labor Market Information, Supply and Demand.

This data includes the job outlook, total projected jobs, ratio of graduates to jobs, and projected annual job growth rate—the same data displayed on the maps.

The industry overview maps were created by using the above data and summing only those jobs with related degrees taught at a TBR institution. For instance, for computer networking jobs, network administrator jobs were not counted in the overview map because they require a bachelor’s degree, but they are included in the Workforce Investment Area data for that specific field.

Campus locations were provided by TBR for their campuses, and by the National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES) for all other institutions. TBR campus locations with fewer than 50 FTE students in the fall term were excluded

Data on which academic programs were taught at which campuses were provided by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission for public institutions, and by IPEDS for private institutions. Academic programs (defined by CIP codes) are connected to occupations (defined by SOC codes) using the NCES and Bureau of Labor Statistics crosswalk.
