About the Department

The Department of Government Relations' staff works closely with the executive and legislative branches of state government on legislative and administrative matters. Strong relationships between the system and the executive and legislative branches of government are critical. This office is responsible for maintaining such relationships and developing new ones. In addition, it is the responsibility of this office to advance the system's legislative agenda and keep the chancellor, board, executive staff, and presidents informed of proposed public policy which may impact the system.

Legislative Digest

Each year staff prepares a comprehensive legislative digest. The document highlights legislation that was passed by the Tennessee General Assembly and will affect Tennessee higher education, the TBR System and its member institutions. For each bill included, the compilation provides a brief summary, its effective date, and the hypertext link to the public chapter. If you are looking for the status of a bill that either did not pass or was not included in this year's compilation, you will need to access the website of the General Assembly.
