TBR's 3rd Annual Advising Academy will take place on March 7th & 8th, 2019 at the Nelson Andrews Leadership Lodge!

The purpose of the Advising Academy is to further the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) Completion Agenda by promoting advising skillsets in accordance with the data-informed best practices for student success. This year TBR will partner with the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) to continue our focus on the development and dissemination of innovative theory, research, and practice of academic advising in higher education.
Day 1 of the conference is designed exclusively for TBR institutions and will focus on providing equitable high impact practices that support the relational advising model and peer mentoring programs at our community colleges across the state. Please note that TBR attendees who sign up for Day 1 will be automatically registered for both days.
Day 2 of the conference will have a focus on students in transitions from high school into 2 & 4-year post-secondary institutions and ultimately into the workforce and is open to TBR & non-TBR public institutions within the state of Tennessee. Please note that non TBR attendees are exclusively invited on Day 2 and will not have access to sessions on Day 1.

*Non-TBR public institutions attending day 2 of the academy will be charged a $65 attendance fee.

Reservation cancellations must be made at least three (3) working days prior to arrival, and a cancellation number is obtained. If not, your institution will be charged for lodging.
Please be sure to have your parking ticket stamped at the front desk for complimentary parking. You will not receive reimbursement for parking.

Elizabeth M. Higgins, Ed.D. Beth Higgins has over 25 years of experience in academic advising. Throughout her years in the advising profession, Higgins has implemented a dual advising program, developed advising assessment plans, coordinated professional development for advisors, led the University of Maine System-wide Advising Committee, and coordinated numerous retention and persistence initiatives. Most recently Beth has been the transition lead for academic advising at her institution. Dr. Higgins has been active in NACADA at the regional and national levels. In addition to facilitating numerous conference presentations, Beth has served as a NACADA Board of Directors member, Chair of the Commission for Undecided and Exploratory Students, member of the Commission and Interest Group Steering Committee, and has been a contributor to the NACADA Clearinghouse, Academic Advising Today, and Advising Administration Monograph.
Beth Higgins received her B.S. in Business Administration and her M.S. in Adult Education from the University of Southern Maine. Beth received her Ed.D. in Education with a Higher Education Administration concentration from Northeastern University. Her research focuses upon the faculty and student advising relationship. Higgins is also a Reiki Master, Global Career Development Facilitator, LEAN Continuous Improvement Practitioner, and holds certificates in Mediation and MBTI Step I and II. Beth and her husband Dan reside in Portland Maine where they enjoy the beautiful beaches and the great outdoors with family and friends.
Ashlee Roberts, Ph.D. is the Associate Director of the Office of Student Involvement and adjunct professor in the Higher Education program at University of Missouri-St. Louis. In this capacity, she coordinates diversity and community service initiatives, and supervises student activities, fraternity & sorority life, and leadership education. Roberts is an alumna of the University of Memphis, where she triple-majored, and University of South Carolina, where she received her Master of Education in Higher Education Administration. Roberts completed her PhD in Higher Education Administration at Saint Louis University.
She is passionate about professional development, personally and in helping others. Roberts is actively involved in NASPA, having served as a member of the IV-West board via her role as a Knowledge Community chair, on the NASPA IV-West/East joint regional conference planning committee, and on the Centennial Annual Conference planning committee. Additionally, she served as the chair of the Staff Professional Development committee for the Division of Student Affairs at her institution.
Jonelle Knox, Ed. D has more than 20 years of higher education, corporate, and governmental experience. For more than 15 years, Dr. Knox worked at various financial institutions including: RBC Bank, State of Maryland, and NovaStar Home Mortgage. His last role in corporate America was Assistant Vice President of Risk Management at LawCash.
Dr. Knox currently serves as Associate Higher Education Officer - Academic Affairs at the College of Staten Island (CUNY). Prior to his appointment at CSI, Jonelle served as Chief of Staff to the Provost at Westchester Community College (SUNY). He has worked as an adjunct assistant professor for more than fifteen years at institutions including: Kennedy King College, Moraine Valley Community College, ASA College, Westchester Community College, Medgar Evers College (CUNY) and currently at Bronx Community College (BCC) (CUNY). At BCC, Jonelle has served as Director of the Men of Color Initiative program, Criminal Justice Student Activity Coordinator, and Student Government Advisor.
In 2018, Jonelle wrote a peer-reviewed article entitled Successful Black Males at a Hispanic Serving Community College: A Multiple Case Study and a NISOD Abstract entitled Academic Skills 101: In-Class Support Services which focuses on incorporating support services in the classroom. He is an author in an upcoming anthology of perspectives from mid-level community college administrators. Jonelle was selected to participate in the 2018 cohort of the Thomas Lakin Institute which prepares Black senior-level community college executives for positions as chief executive officers.
Dr. Knox earned an Associates of General Studies from Harold Washington College, a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration, and a Master’s of Science in Criminal Justice from Chicago State University, a Doctorate in Education from Morgan State University specializing in Community College Leadership, and is currently pursuing a 2nd Master’s in English – specializing in Writing and Rhetoric at Lehman College (CUNY). His research interests include educating incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals at community colleges and minority male success.
Ken Baron, Ph.D. is currently Assistant Vice Provost for Academic Advising and Student Success at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). He is in his 12th year of service at UMBC where he leads and manages academic advising practices as both an administrator and a practitioner. Before coming to UMBC, Dr. Baron held diverse leadership positions at a variety of institutions including Emory University, The College of New Jersey, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and the American InterContinental University in London. Dr. Baron received his bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Maryland, College Park. He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Educational Studies at the University of Surrey, Guildford, England where his graduate study and research were supported by a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship.
Dr. Baron also holds four professional counseling certifications sponsored by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) and the Center for Credentialing and Education (CCEE). In 2017 he received special recognition by NBCC for dedication to the pursuit of continuing education. In 2018 he delivered a keynote speech sponsored by the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) at American University.
